Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 13 Analysis and predictions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday

Montreal Alouettes at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5.5, 54)

The Alouettes will be seeking a third straight win against Blue Bombers, who have been capable of the best and the worst this season. The last two weeks have been a clear example of that lack of consistency. After beating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-2 on September 12, the Bombers went to lose 17-13 against the Argonauts in Toronto. The Blue Bombers have not won two in a row in more than a year and they have the bad habit of shooting themselves in the foot.

With Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo back to full strength after missing two games with a sternum injury, the Alouettes have to be considered one the powerhouses of this league. This said, the Montreal defence must do its part and contain one of the best rushing team led by Fred Reid. Winnipeg has the best average per run (6.6) and the second best rushing yard average per game (146.5).

Last time the Blue Bombers met the Alouettes, more than a month ago, they lost 39-17.

Pick: Montreal

Saturday

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-1.5, 53.5)

One week after beating the Calgary Stampeders 43-37, the Roughriders are in Hamilton to face the Tiger-Cats, who they beat 37-24 last time they met in Regina on July 31. But, in that game, Arland Bruce III proved to be dominant for the Tiger-Cats by catching 16 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. This time around, the Riders secondary promises to make life more difficult for Bruce who leads the CFL with 985 receiving yards.

After a slow start, the Tiger-Cats won five of their last six games and now share second place in the East with the Toronto Argonauts. Bruce was shut down by the B.C. Lions last week but running back DeAndra’ Cobb took over with 151 rushing yards. The Tiger Cats will also feature new comer DE Stevie Baggs, who will make his Hamilton debut against his former team. The Roughriders are unbeaten at home but they have won only one of their five road games in 2010.

Pick: Hamilton

B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-10.5, 55)

The best team in the CFL has not lost to the Lions since November 3 2007, which means an eight-game winning streak against their rivals from British Colombia. This season, the Stampeders won its two games against the Lions, 27-22 in Week 6 and 48-39 in Week 9. The stats compiled by the Stampeders are incredible with an average of 36 points scored per game and a defence that leads in 16 of 25 categories such as points allowed (22.3 per game), TDs allowed (20), QB sacks (31) and turnovers (37).

The Lions can pull off an upset and their 3-8 record is misleading. The Alouettes learned that a few weeks ago. Quarterback Casey Printers can rely on two receivers, Geroy Simon and Emmanuel Arcenaux, who are on their way to 1,000-yard pass seasons. This said, the Stampeders are never easy prey at McMahon Stadium, where they are still unbeaten in five games this season. It would be quite a surprise to see them lose a second game in a row. Don’t forget that the Stampeders can guarantee a playoff spot and home-field advantage with a win against B.C.

Pick: Calgary

Sunday

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 49)

Touchdown Atlantic will feature the worst team in the CFL, the Edmonton Eskimos, who have a record of 2-9. These Eskimos were simply pathetic to watch in Montreal last week. On the road, the Eskimos are winless in five games. Quarterback Ricky Ray is playing sub-par football with only seven touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. He owns the worst pass-completion percentage in the league at 61.6 percent. It’s not much better on the Argos side where QB Cleo Lemon is second to last with only 62.4 percent of his passes completed.

Argos DT Adriano Belli made the trip to the Maritimes but is still doubtful to play. He missed the last six games because of a foot injury. Running back Cory Boyd will also likely miss a second straight game because of a concussion. The Argos may welcome back WR Reggie McNeal, who is off the nine-game injury list and might play against the Eskimos.

Pick: Toronto
